Join Eisenhower Dance Detroit’s Executive Director, Anne Bak Marine, as she hosts guest speakers to explore the who, what, when, where, why, AND how of contemporary dance. Come along as she takes a deep dive into the art form she has dedicated herself to for over 30 years. Each session will feature an insightful conversation with guest artists who share their expertise on a wide range of topics related to contemporary dance. The end result? A contemporary dance aficionado you will be!

All sessions will take place from 7pm-8:30pm (ET). Real-time participation is encouraged, but not mandatory. All sessions will be recorded for participants to view at their leisure.

Session One: Exploring the Definition of Contemporary

This session will investigate the meaning of contemporary as it applies to dance and other art forms.

Session Two: Engaging with Contemporary Dance

This session will explore how best to experience contemporary dance...what to watch for, interpret, sit back and enjoy.

Session Three: Understanding the Choreographic Process

This session dives into the choreographer’s mind as he or she creates in the contemporary dance idiom.

Session Four: Diving into Dance History

This session sets the backdrop for the evolution of dance into the contemporary form we are experiencing today.

Session Five: Understanding the Legacy of Black Culture in Contemporary Dance - Josephine Baker to Micaela Taylor

This session connects Black culture and its impact on Contemporary Dance.

Session Six: Focusing on the Influence of Social Dance, Musical Theatre, and Tap on Contemporary Dance

This session bridges the gap between a variety of dance genres and the impact they have had on contemporary dance.

Session Seven: Stepping into Today’s Influences on Contemporary Dance

This session digs into how competition dance, commercial dance, and current social issues affect the evolution of contemporary dance on today’s stages.

Session Eight: Arriving with a Critic’s Eye!

This session draws on the knowledge gleaned from previous sessions to prepare you to watch dance with a critic’s eye taking into account choreography, costuming, lighting, and technique.
